HOUSTON - Following a season-opening victory over Gardner-Webb Friday night, the University of Houston women's basketball team continues its two-game road trip to open the season Tuesday night when it travels to Arlington, Texas, to face UT-Arlington 7 p.m. at Texas Hall.
Houston (1-0) started the season off with a victory for the third consecutive season under head coach Joe Curl, getting a game-high 27 points from junior guard Brittney Scott to beat the Runnin' Bulldogs. Scott made 11-of-12 free throw attempts and produced 19 of her scoring output during the second half.
In addition to Scott's impressive offensive output against Gardner-Webb, junior forward Courtney Taylor notched her 26th career double-double moving her just nine double-doubles behind all-time program leader Sancho Lyttle, who tallied 35 during her UH career. Taylor currently sits in fifth place on the UH all-time double-double list, next up are Vicky Finch (1979-83) and Sonya Watkins (1982-86).
UT-Arlington (1-0) is fresh off a win over a Conference USA team, defeating Rice 81-64 at Texas Hall with four players in double-figure scoring, led by Jackie Stanley who had 14 points.
The all-time series between Houston and UTA has been a one-sided affair with the Cougars taking all seven prior meetings between the schools. Despite holding the edge in the series with UTA, Houston has not faced the Mavericks on the basketball court since Nov. 23, 1985, when the Cougars topped UTA 100-69 at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Following the two-game away stint to open the season, the Cougars will christen the new campaign for the first time on their home court Thursday when they host Oregon State in a 7 p.m. contest at Hofheinz Pavilion.
