HOUSTON - Fresh off its first win away from the Bayou City earlier this week, the University of Houston women's basketball team returns to Hofheinz Pavilion, where it has posted a perfect 3-0 record this season, Friday when the Cougars entertain cross-town rival Texas Southern at 7 p.m.
The contest will possibly be a monumental one for Cougar head coach Joe Curl who stands on the verge of his 300th career victory, entering the TSU game with a career record of 299-244 in 19 years of coaching.
Friday's contest will be the 14th meeting between the schools in series history with the Cougars holding a 12-1 advantage on the series. UH opened the 2007-08 campaign against TSU and handed the visiting Tigers a 76-58 defeat.
This season the Cougars have been nothing less of stellar on their home court where they are averaging 74 points per game while holding their opponents to an average of 60. UH has gotten spectacular contributions from its underclassmen, four of whom enter Friday averaging double digit scoring on their home court.
Sophomore forward Courtney Taylor, as she has all season long, has been the Cougars' best performer at Hofheinz, by averaging a double-double with 16 points and just under 14 rebounds per contest. The Crockett, Texas, native has produce three double-doubles in three home games this year to give her 13 for her career. Classmate Brittney Scott has also been impressive, making 41 percent of her attempts from three-point range at home this season to average 12 points.
Freshmen Roxana Button and Porsche Landry have also been outstanding combining for 22.3 points per contest in three home games. Landry is coming off a career-high 23 point performance in the Cougar's road victory over North Texas on Tuesday.
