QUEENS, N.Y. -- The University of Houston women's basketball team rode an 11-2 run out of halftime to break open a close game and defeat the Buffalo Bulls 80-62 on Sunday in the 2008 St. John's-Chartwells Holiday Classic in New York City.
Houston improved to 7-3 on the season after splitting a pair of weekend games at the tournament.
Sophomore forward Courtney Taylor had another monster game for the Cougars, dominating on both sides of the floor. Taylor poured in a career-high 25 points after shooting 11-of-19 from the floor, grabbing 16 rebounds and blocking five shots as she picked up All-Tournament Team honors.
It was the third straight double-double for Taylor and the 15th of her career.
Freshman guard Porsche Landry added 16 points after lighting up the basket, shooting 7-of-10 from the floor. Landry's up-tempo play set the tone early for the Cougars as they never trailed after the opening minutes.
Fellow freshman guard Roxana Button also scored in double figures, netting 11 points and going 6-of-6 from the free throw line.
The Cougars jumped out to an eight point lead, 29-21, 12 minutes into the game riding their hot shooting, as they went 11-of-19 (.579) from the floor during that stretch.
Taylor powered the first half run pouring in 11 points, pulling down a pair of boards and swatting two shots.
Houston and Buffalo would exchange baskets the rest of the way, as the Cougars entered halftime with a 40-32 lead.
Out of the break, Houston pieced together an 11-2 run to take control with a 17 point lead at 51-34 with nearly 12 minutes to play.
That dominating eight minute stretch came on the back on UH's suffocating defensive pressure, which held the Bulls to just 1-of-16 (.063) from the floor during that span.
Houston returns to the hardwood at 2 p.m., Dec. 28, when the Cougars host Akron inside Hofheinz Pavilion in the first game of a UH basketball double-header. The men's team will face Iowa State at 5 p.m.
