Scott, Echeverria Named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 Teams

HOUSTON -- University of Houston soccer players Shelby Scott and Nikki Echeverria were named to ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District teams, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America and ESPN The Magazine on Thursday.
Scott was named to the First Team for the second-straight year, while Echeverria garnered Third-Team honors for Houston.
It marked the fourth-straight year overall a Cougar was placed on the First Team.
Scott has emerged as the anchor of the UH defense, as the senior netminder has made 16 starts, recording five shutouts, notching 76 saves and posting a career-best 1.34 goals against average this season.
She is Houston's all-time leader in wins (19), clean sheets (13) and saves (301).
Echeverria is a key player in the Cougar offensive attack, as the playmaking midfielder has played in 15 contests and ranks second on the club in assists this season.
She has tallied three goals and recorded four assists during her time at UH.
The Cougars return to action at 7 p.m., Friday, as they close out their 2008 campaign with the season finale against crosstown- and Conference USA-rival Rice.
Friday's match also will be Senior Day for the Houston soccer team, as the university would like to recognize and show its appreciation to the program's departing seniors.
The Academic All-America Teams program honors 816 male and female student-athletes annually who have succeeded at the highest level on the playing field and in the classroom. Individuals are selected through voting by CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America), a 2,000 member organization consisting of sports public relations professionals for colleges and universities in the United States and Canada.
To be eligible, a student-athletes must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports.
