HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team lost a tough 3-2 (21-25, 25-20, 25-19, 22-25 and 9-15) decision Sunday afternoon to Tulane at the Athletics/Alumni Center. The match was taped delayed and will air at 8 p.m. on Oct. 28 on CBS College Sports.
Houston falls to 14-10 this season and 6-5 in conference play. UH is now 22-6 all-time against the Green Wave.
Three Cougars recorded double-digit kills in the match. Senior Justine Farmer finished with a game-high 20 kills, in addition to her 17 digs for her eighth double-double this season. Sophomore Lucy Charuk had 17 kills, while freshman Ingrida Zauere added 10 kills.
After splitting the first two sets, Houston opened the third set scoring the first four points. That would set the tone for the set, as the Cougars held an 11-5 lead as Tulane called its first timeout. Out of the break, the Green Wave scored the next four points but pulling within two points, 11-9, would be as close as they would get. Houston would hold on for the 25-19 win in the third set.
Tulane rebounded in the fourth set. They answered the Cougars fast start in the third set with a 3-1 start of their own. The Cougars would manage to tie the set 4-4 and take its first lead with the scoreboard reading, 6-5. However, both teams would trade eight tie scores and two lead changes before Tulane was able to hold on to the momentum winning, 25-22.
In the fifth set, it was all Tulane as they opened on an 8-1 run. Houston made a slight run of their own but the deficit was too much to over come and the Green Wave won the set, 15-9.
Houston is 3-4 this season in five-set matches.
