Volleyball Falls 3-1 to SMU

Dallas- The University of Houston volleyball team fell to SMU 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 18-25 and 21-25) Friday night at Moody Coliseum.
Senior Justine Farmer led Houston (14-11, 6-6 C-USA) with 17 kills and 17 digs for her ninth double-double this season. Senior Kelsey King added 43 assists, while sophomore Amanda Carson had 24 digs.
After losing the first set, Houston bounced back to take the second set. SMU opened the set to take a 3-1 lead but Houston bounced back to move ahead, 12-9, forcing the Mustang bench to call a timeout. Out of the break, UH held to momentum and extended their lead, 17-12, and once again SMU called a timeout. Off the bench, SMU made a slight run and pulled within three, 19-16 but Houston was able to hold on for the win.
The Cougars opened the third set scoring the first point, but the Mustangs responded scoring two of the next three points and they would never look back as SMU never lost the lead again and won the third set, 25-18.
With a final chance to even the match, Houston came out slow in the fourth set but managed to tie the score, 12-12, prompting a timeout from the SMU bench. Houston took back the lead, 17-14, out of the break but they would not be able to hold on for the win as SMU would come back to win the set with a score of 25-21.
Houston is 5-2 this season in four-set matches.

Following this weekend's road trip, Houston will return home to close out the regular season with three matches against Memphis (Nov. 7), UAB (Nov. 9) and Rice (Nov. 13). Prior to the Cougars home finale against Rice, the team will honor seniors Justine Farmer, Kelsey King and Barbara Freitas.
The Cougars will also participate in the 2008 Conference USA Championship in Memphis, Tenn., on Nov. 20-23.
