HOUSTON - The University of Houston women's basketball team signed two student-athletes to National Letters of Intent during the early singing period, Interim Head Coach Danny Hughes announced today.
The two players, Roxana Button (Dallas, Texas/Coppell HS) and Deeva Vaughn (Albuquerque, N.M./Highland HS) are both rising seniors in high school and will join the Cougars for the 2008-09 season.
"We are very pleased to announce the signings of these two outstanding student athletes as part of our 2008 recruiting class," Hughes said. "Both of these young ladies have played at a high level of competition year around and the transition to the Division I level should be a quick adjustment for them here next season."
Button, a 5-9 guard, has been selected First-Team All-District 6-5A in each of the past two seasons. She is ranked among the top-30 players at her position in Texas.
She averaged 15 points per game, four rebounds per game and six assists per game as a junior. Button has played on the varsity team at Coppell each of the previous three seasons.
During the summer, Button has spent extensive time playing with the North Texas Shockers, an AAU team.
"Roxana, is a fierce competitor at the guard spot who possesses a great basketball IQ of the game," Hughes said. "She can play multiple positions for us at the guard spot. We look forward to seeing her development over the next four years."
Vaughn is a 6-0 swing player who is a two-time Associated Press First-Team All-State honoree.
She is a two-time First-Team All-Metro selection (2006, 2007) who averaged 24.0 ppg and 14.0 rpg. She is ranked as one of the top prep players in Albuquerque and in the State of New Mexico.
"Deeva, is a unique player in that she can play several positions for us and has a tremendous upside," Hughes said. "She is ranked as the #1 player in New Mexico and has the chance to come in right away and be an impact player for us next season.
"WIth the addition of these two young ladies along with the class that we signed last season will give us the foundation to get the program back to where it belongs on a consistent basis."
UH is back in action on Tuesday, Dec. 4 as the Cougars start a three-game road swing at Texas Tech. UH and the Lady Raiders are scheduled to tip off at 7 p.m. CST in the United Spirit Arena.
