Four Double Doubles Leads UH Women's Basketball Past SMU

HOUSTON - Four players with double doubles and a record-setting rebounding night helped to lead the University of Houston women's basketball team to an 81-65 win over SMU Saturday in Conference USA action on Guy V. Lewis Court at Hofheinz Pavilion.
Forty of Houston's 81 points came from its post players, and the Cougars closed the night out with a C-USA single-game record 36 offensive rebounds. Those 36 rebounds turned into 38 second-chance points and 28 points in the paint. UH totaled a season-high 68 rebounds, tying a C-USA single-game record and also the fourth-highest total in school history, to SMU's 40.
Tye Jackson (Houston, Texas/Westfield HS/Purdue) led the way with her second-straight double double and fourth of the season. She finished with 21 points and 10 rebounds, hitting 10-12 from the charity stripe. Whitney James (Edmond, Okla./Edmond Memorial HS/North Oklahoma College) netted her second-career double-double with 17 points and a career-high 14 rebounds.
Sunshine Misa Uli (Honolulu, Hawai'i/Farrington HS/Barton County CC) had 14 points and a career-high 12 rebounds, but the night belonged to Sha'Quaylon McKinney (Dallas, Texas/Skyline HS/Trinity Valley CC). The senior had a career night, finishing with 18 points and 16 rebounds. She hit 10 of 13 free throws while playing just 22 minutes.
The Cougars (7-11, 4-4 C-USA) have won six-straight games at Hofheinz Pavilion and picked up their first win at home over SMU since March 7, 1992. SMU (11-9, 3-5 C-USA) has dropped four in-a-row.
Trailing by seven at the break, UH used a 27-6 run over the first 10:10 of the second half to take a 13-point advantage, leading 56-43 with 9:50 left in the game. A 9-2 SMU run over the next 2:30 had the margin down to six, 58-52, with 7:01 to go. A 9-0, 3:34 run by Houston put the game away for good with 3:27 remaining. SMU was within nine, 69-60, with 2:32 left, but the Cougars hit 12-14 free throws in the final 2:30 to ensure the victory.
Jillian Samuels led four SMU players in double figures with 22 points. Katy Cobb and Janielle Dodds both finished with 12 points while Brittany Gilliam finished with 11.
A 28.2 percent (11-39) first-half shooting percentage had the Cougars in a seven-point, 37-30 hole at the break. SMU hit their first three shots of the game, putting Houston into an early 6-0 deficit. UH righted the ship and took a 9-8 lead with 15:07 remaining in the half.
UH went nearly six minutes without scoring a field goal but SMU could not capitalize, leading 18-15 with 8:30 to go. Houston was within one, 22-21, with 5:36 left, but a 6-0 SMU run had the lead to seven, 28-21, with 4:12 left.
SMU led by as many as nine, 32-23 with 3:18 to go, but a 7-2 Houston run brought the margin down to four with under two minutes remaining. UH would not score in the final 1:56 and a three by SMU's Samuels gave the Mustangs their seven-point cushion heading into the locker room.
The Cougars controlled the offensive boards in the opening 20 minutes, pulling down 17 offensive rebounds to SMU's seven while converting those boards into 17 second-chance points.
The Cougars complete a four-game homestand next weekend facing off on Thursday wtih Tulane before taking on UTEP next Saturday. Tipoffs are scheduled for 7 p.m. CST and 2 p.m., respectively.
