HOUSTON - Freshman Jessica Shamburger and senior captain Szintia Szanto each posted wins in individual events to help lead the University of Houston swimming and diving team to a commanding 141-49 lead over New Orleans after the first day of a two-day quad meet Friday at the LSU Natatorium.
However, LSU held a 136-69 lead over the Cougars, while Conference USA rival Rice posted a 106-87 advantage over UH through the first 10 events.
The meet wraps up at 11 a.m., Sunday. Admission to the LSU Natatorium is free.
Shamburger, a native of Spring, won the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 56.70, the second-fastest time in school history in that event.
Szanto, the reigning C-USA Swimmer of the Week, grabbed top honors in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:06.00, more than two-and-a-half seconds ahead of her closest competitor. The Budapest, Hungary native also finished third in the 100-yard butterfly and swam the anchor leg of the Cougars' 400-yard freestyle relay team that finished third.
Szanto was joined on that relay team by sophomores Sasha Schwendenwein and Andrea Pa'lmai. Pa'lmai finished third in the 1,000-yard freestyle, while Schwendenwein finished second in the 200-yard freestyle with a clocking of 1:52.11. On the diving side, junior Ginni van Katwijk finished third on the 1-meter springboard after tallying 266.92 points and on the 3-meter springboard, recording 303.83 points.
Following their stay at the Quad Meet, the Cougars will continue east on Interstate 10 and wrap up their 2006-07 regular-season schedule at 11 a.m., Sunday when they face New Orleans again in a relay meet at the UNO Lakefront Aquatics Center.
While Sunday's meet will end the 2006-07 regular season for the Cougars, fans will still have one last chance to watch the Cougars in action at home. For the fourth consecutive season, UH will play host to the 2007 C-USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and Men's Invitational on Feb. 14-17 at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
