BATON ROUGE, La. - University of Houston swimmer Andrea Pa'lmai won a pair of individual events and was a member of a second-place relay team to help lead the Cougars to a dominating 237-99 win over New Orleans on Saturday during the final day of a quad meet at the LSU Natatorium.
The Cougars fell to Conference USA rival Rice 189-152 and dropped a 233-120 decision to host LSU on the final day of competition at the two-day meet. With that, the Cougars ended the 2007 regular season with a 17-6 overall record, nearly doubling the previous single-season record of nine wins set by the 2005-06 and 2003-04 teams.
Pa'lmai captured first place in the 200-yard backstroke with a clocking of 2:03.47, the second-fastest time in UH history. The Budapest native also grabbed top honors in the 400-yard individual medley with a time of 4:26.56 to finish nearly eight seconds ahead of her closest competitor.
Senior captain Szintia Szanto, the Cougars' swimming captain in 2006-07 and the reigning C-USA Swimmer of the Week, won the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 2:02.16 -- the fourth-fastest time in school history in that event - to finish more than three seconds ahead of her closest competitor. Szanto also finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke after posting a time of 1:05.61.
Both swimmers, who are natives of Budapest, Hungary, were members of the Cougars' 400-yard medley relay team, which finished second with a time of 3:53.82, joining freshman Jessica Shamburger and sophomore Sasha Schwendenwein.
The Cougars wrap up their 2006-07 regular-season schedule at 11 a.m., Sunday when they meet New Orleans in a relay meet at the UNO Lakefront Aquatics Center.
While Sunday's meet will end the 2006-07 regular season for the Cougars, fans will still have one last chance to watch the Cougars in action at home. For the fourth consecutive season, UH will play host to the 2007 C-USA Women's Swimming and Diving Championship and Men's Invitational on Feb. 14-17 at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Center Natatorium.
