Houston, Texas - Both Kevin Kolb and Justin Laird picked up Conference USA Player-of-the-Week honors in leading the Cougars to a 34-25 win over Oklahoma State last Saturday night, it was announced today by the league office in Irving.
In picking up his second Offensive Player of the Week honors, Kolb passed for 313 yards and four touchdowns in leading the Cougars to a 34-25 win over Oklahoma State to improve to 4-0. Starting his 40th consecutive game, which leads the nation, Kolb completed 21-of-28 passes with no interceptions, while rushing for an additional 42 yards on 11 carries. Kolb completed passes to nine different receivers, hooking up on touchdowns with Mark Hafner (33 yards), Donnie Avery (42 yards), Vincent Marshall (27 yards) and Biren Ealy (7 yards).
Even though he had not punted since the Tulane game, Laird, in a pouring rain and late in the fourth quarter, averaged 46.0 yards on those two crucial punts, enabling the Cougars defeat the Cowboys, 34-25. On his last punt Laird boomed a 49-yarder from his own end zone, and his teammate Roy Otis forced a fumble on OSU's Perrish Cox and was recovered by UH's Brandon Brinkley to seal the win.
Tulsa's Moton Hopkins was C-USA's Defensive Player of the Week.
These honors were the fourth and fifth for the Cougars so far in 2006. In both 1996 and 2003, Houston grabbed six individual conference player of the week accolades.
Houston travels out of the state of Texas for the first time this season, traveling to Miami to face the Hurricanes on Saturday, September 30. Game time is slated for 5 pm CDT and will be broadcast live on ESPN 2.
