Volleyball Falls in Four to Memphis

Memphis, Tenn. - The University of Houston volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision at Memphis (26-30, 30-20, 28-30, 22-30) to open Conference USA action Friday night.
Shelby Burton headlined Memphis (14-2, 1-1 C-USA) with 24 kills on a .467 attack percentage, while Sarah Bury and Ashley Liford added 15 kills apiece. Laura Cote passed out a match-best 58 assists and corralled 13 digs for the victors.
The Cougars (9-7, 0-1 C-USA) fall to 8-3 and have dropped three of its last four C-USA openers. Sunshine Misa-Uli led the way, powering home 20 kills and 12 digs.
Justine Farmer and Becca Sartori tacked on 16 and 14 kills, respectfully. With 14 kills, Sartori moved past Nashika Stokes (1993-96) for the No. 9 spot all-time. The Houston native now has 1,161 career kills and is seven kills away from Michelle Frazier (1997-2000) for the No. 8 position.
Krystal Schulle notched her fourth double-double in her last five matches, dishing out 49 assists and pulled in 14 digs. Millicent Martin reeled in 18 digs, while Ashley Calhoun sprawled out for 15 digs in the loss.
Houston held a 16-14 advantage in game one before Memphis went on an 8-2 run to grab a 24-20 lead. The Tigers used seven opening game kills from Bury and connected on a .385 attack percentage to take game one, 30-26.
The Cougars regrouped in the second game behind strong defense. The Houston front row forced nine Memphis attack errors and held the Tigers to a .039 mark. Down 8-7, the Cougars scored 10 of the next 12 points, capped by a pair of Ashley Calhoun services aces to go ahead 17-10. Houston got three kills apiece from Farmer and Misa-Uli to hold on for the 30-20 victory.
Memphis jumped out to a 12-6 lead in game three, but Houston fought back to even the score at 17-17. The Tigers responded by taking advantage of a Cougar service and attack error coupled with a block to retake a 20-17 advantage.
Memphis extended the lead to 28-22 before holding off a Cougar rally to take a pivotal third game, 30-28. The Tigers used that momentum to take an early game four lead close out the match, 30-22.
The Cougars return home to take on UAB. First serve against the Blazers is slated for 1pm at the Athletics/Alumni Center.

Tonight's match was the first time since the 2004 season that Houston and Memphis have met on the volleyball court ... The two teams did not meet last season due to Hurricane Rita ...
