HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team rebounded with a 3-0 sweep of UAB (30-21, 30-24, 30-27) Sunday afternoon at the Athletics/Alumni Center. The victory stopped a 10-match Blazer winning streak.
"I'm not sure what it is about playing at home," middle blocker Becca Sartori said. "We played more relaxed today where at Memphis we were scrambling all over the court."
Krystal Schulle set a balanced attack for the Cougars (10-7, 1-1 C-USA), passing out 34 assists as three Houston players hit double-digit kills. Justine Farmer led the way, smacking 11 kills and added 14 digs.
Kelly McAnelly recorded 10 kills and 14 digs, while Sartori also added 10 kills on a .300 attack percentage. Sartori moved past Michelle Frazier (1997-2000) for the No. 8 spot on the career kills list. The Houston native now has 1,171 kills and is 23 away from Karen Bell (1988-91) for the No. 7 hole.
Ashley Calhoun served in three aces, while Erin Rice added a career-best seven blocks. The Cougars outblocked UAB, 12-6.
"We did a better job executing the scouting report when it came to blocking today," Sartori said. "We knew who we needed to stay on top of and it showed."
Ivana Bozic and Fernanda Domingos notched 11 kills apiece for UAB. Bozic added 10 digs for a double-double, while Nevena Stefanov dished out a match-best 36 assists in the loss.
The Cougars came out connecting on all cylinders, connecting on a .367 attack percentage to take a 30-21 opening game win. Houston received a balanced attack as Millicent Martin and Sartori powered home kills apiece coupled with a trio of kills from Farmer and McAnelly.
Houston kept the momentum with strong serving in game two, recording five aces. Calhoun and Martin combined for four of the five aces as the Cougars took game two going away 30-24.
Game three was a fight to the finish as the two teams tallied 12 ties and seven lead changes. The Blazers built an early 10-4 advantage, but Houston charged back to eventually take a 22-20 lead. UAB regrouped and regained a 25-24 edge forcing a Martin attack error. The Cougars closed out the sweep scoring six of the next eight points capped by a Schulle kill for the 30-27 win.
The Cougars face off against UTEP and Tulane next weekend at the Athletics/Alumni Center.
"This afternoon started a stretch of five of our next six matches at home so hopefully we can get a run of wins going to build some momentum at home before having to go out on the road again," head coach Bill Walton said.
First serve against the Miners is scheduled for 7pm Friday. Houston concludes the weekend with a 1pm Sunday start against the Green Wave.
