MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Britney Davis-White scored a game-high 17 points, all in the second half, to lead West Virginia to a 73-47 win over Houston, Thursday at the WVU Coliseum.
The Cougars (0-5), mired in the worst start in school history, shot under 30 percent (16-59/.271) for the third time this season. WVU (3-3) had four players in double figures and knocked in seven triples on the night.
Davis-White, who took just one shot in the opening 20 minutes, was 5-for-9 in the second half, including three triples. She made more threes than UH's entire team (1-12).
After trailing 32-20 at the half, Houston pulled off an 8-0 run over the first 2:35 of the second half to shrink WVU's lead to five at 33-28. As has been the case all season, the offense failed the Cougars as the Mountaineers rattled off an 11-2 run to lead 45-30 with 11:49 left. During that span of 5:14 UH was 0-7 from the floor with three turnovers.
WVU would run the lead to as many as 28, taking advantage of a strong inside game that dominated UH in the paint by a 30-18 margin. UH had two droughts of more than four minutes without making a field goal and the Cougars hit just four field goals in the final 11:31 of the game. The Mountaineers also took advantage of Houston's mistakes, converting 21 points off UH's 15 turnovers.
Sha'Ratta Hawkins (Houston, Texas/Jesse Jones HS) and Ashlee' Joseph (Houston, Texas/Booker T. Washington HS) led UH with 10 points on the night. For Joseph, it set a career best and her first career game in double figures. Hawkins has scored in double digits in four-consecutive contests.
Yinka Sanni finished with 16 points, 11 of which came in the first half, and nine rebounds for WVU, while Laquita Owens and Sparkle Davis each knocked in 10.
Houston started off the game strong, moving out to a 4-0 lead and holding the lead for the first 6:34 of the game. The teams traded buckets and the lead over the next few minutes but UH's offense went ice cold after the hot start. WVU ended the half on a 23-10 run with UH going just 2-for-16 with three turnovers during the final 8:23 of the opening stanza.
UH was 4-for-6 (.667) from the field during the first 5:38 of the game, but 12-for-53 (.226) for the rest of the game.
The Cougars close out the trip with a Conference USA matchup at Marshall on Sat., at 1 p.m. It will mark only the second time in school history Houston has played a league game before Jan. 1. Free internet audio of all Houston games is accessible at www.UHCougars.com.
