HOUSTON - The University of Houston football team began preparations for this weekend's showdown and 2005 home opener against area-rival Sam Houston State with a solid workout Tuesday afternoon at the UH Athletics Complex.
The Cougars play host to Sam Houston State at 6 p.m., Saturday at the friendly confines of John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium. The game can be heard live on ESPN 790 AM with Tom Franklin handling play-by-play duties and Tony Fitzpatrick providing color analysis. Former Cougar Chuck Brown will serve as the roving sideline reporter.
Fans also can hear the game on the Internet by logging onto www.UHCougars.com.
The Cougars come into the game on the heels of a 38-24 loss to Oregon on Thursday at Reliant Stadium. In that game, UH junior quarterback Kevin Kolb threw for 312 yards and became the first Cougar signal-caller since Jason McKinley in 2000 to throw for consecutive 300-yard games,
Although senior running back Anthony Evans and junior linebacker Wade Koehl will be out this weekend after suffering injuries against Oregon, head coach Art Briles said their loss can be overcome.
"I am proud of the guys who got on the field, and the guys who replace them will do a good job," Briles said at his weekly press conference. "We have our guys intact where if I stroke out and die this evening, we are going to play the game Saturday, and we're going to win. We're in good shape with the people we have on board."
This will be the sixth time in school history that these two teams have met on the gridiron with the Cougars winning each of the last three.
The Bearkats (1-0) enter this weekend's game after thrashing Bacone 77-7 in their home opener on Thursday. With such a lopsided loss, Briles admitted that watching that game film will not be a big help for him and his assistant coaches.
"It's really hard for us to evaluate Sam Houston State at all," said Briles, who enters his third season at the helm of the UH program. "We can try to get a feel for their personnel, possibly some alignments and go from there. The game of football is about adjustments. We will have to do that on Saturday.
