HOUSTON, Texas - Getting a feel for game-time atmosphere, the University of Houston football squad scrimmaged for the third time this fall, entertaining the Cougar faithful at John O'Quinn Field at Robertson Stadium.
In a controlled scrimmage the Cougars ran through several plays, with both the number-one offense and number-one defense getting repetitions against the respective scout teams. With just one week remaining before the season opener against Oregon on September 1, Houston scrimmaged for well over an hour on its home field.
UH head coach Art Briles enjoyed his team's performance and especially liked the way the Cougars were enjoying themselves during the humid workout.
"I thought (the scrimmage) went really well," said Briles, "but the biggest thing is that we stayed healthy and that's the main thing. Nobody got hurt. From that point on, it was a productive scrimmage.
"Other than that, I thought our intensity was good, our emotion was good and I thought we got our legs back underneath us. Like I said, we're getting ready to roll. In eight days we're going to strap it up and do it for real."
The number-one defense stepped up and did not allow a score all evening, with freshman cornerback Quinte Williams returning an interception for a score from about 15 yards out. Offensively, the Cougars had two short touchdown runs by senior running back Anthony Evans as well as a touchdown pass from junior Kevin Kolb to senior wide receiver Kendal Briles.
As mentioned, the Cougars have just one week before taking on the Ducks of the Pac 10 Conference, and Briles hopes to fine-tune his team over the next eight days.
"Polish, polish, polish," added Briles. "That is what we will be looking to do over the next several days. We have to make sure our personnel packages are in place on both sides of the ball, and we have to shore up a few things in the kicking game. Then, load up and play ball and say `Welcome to Houston, Oregon.'"
Houston returns to the practice fields tomorrow afternoon at 3 pm on the UH Practice Fields.
