The University of Houston is proud to announce the hiring of Susan Bush as an assistant coach for women's soccer.
Bush, a graduate of St. John's High School in Houston, comes back to the city where she grew up and still has family. She joins a coaching staff of head coach Bill Solberg and first year assistant coach Joshua Walters.
"I am happy to be back in Houston, and I am happy to be starting my coaching career at the University of Houston," Bush said. "I came here because this is a good program to start coaching, and it is an opportunity to build a new program with young players. I feel I bring a different dynamic than the other coaches, and I compliment them well."
Bush played soccer at the University of North Carolina and was an Olympic alternate. She expects to bring her knowledge of the game and experience playing at a higher level to Houston.
"There are a lot of differences between high school and college like the commitment that you have to make to your teammates; you have to balance time between your academics and athletics and your team becomes your family," Bush said. "I can relate to the girls on those levels, but I also have knowledge of the game, I know that you have to have a great work ethic, intensity and I know about the speed of play.
"When I see the girls for the first time, I will tell them that this will be a building year, and I expect them to make the jump from high school soccer to college quickly. I know that playing at a higher level can be an emotional roller coaster, so part of my job is to motivate and reinforce their confidence."
At Houston, Bush's primary responsibility with be recruiting, and she expects to dip into the large talent pool in Houston, but also in the rest of Texas and throughout the Midwest. Bush said UH will go after all the top players in the nation because Houston has everything to offer that all the other schools do.
Even though this is Bush's first coaching position, she knows what she wants to bring to the coaching staff in terms of her coaching style and in terms of what she hopes will happen this season.
"I feel work ethic is the most important aspect of a players' game because their skill level is not going to change drastically, but their work ethic and mentality can," Bush said. "I want this team to have a winning season this year; I want to establish relationships with the players; and I want to bring in new talent."
