Volleyball Comes Up Short At Rice

HOUSTON - At Rice University, the Owls and Cougars battled through a tight match on Tuesday night, where Houston's volleyball team fell 3-0 to the Owls.
The loss marked only the fourth consecutive and ninth time in school history that the Cougars were beaten by the Owls, this time falling 30-28, 33-31 and 30-20. Houston's loss drops the Cougars to 1-7 while Rice improves to 7-1 on the season.
Sophomore Kelly McAnelly recorded her third double double of the season as she led the Cougars with 17 kills, hitting .280 on 50 attacks.
Senior Loure Dews reached a career milestone by moving up to No. 8 on the all-time block assists list with her three stops in tonight's match.
As a team Houston hit .122 to the Owls' .266 and were outpaced in kills 37-60.
The first game of the evening saw the Cougars fall behind 13-19 before rallying to score the next eight of 11 points to pull to within two at 20-22, mostly off of Rice errors.
Down three at 26-28, the Cougar grabbed the next three points to make the game 28-29, but the Owls managed to hold on for the Game 1 win off a Houston attack error.
Battling back-and-forth through much of the second game, the Cougars took a 24-19 lead but the Owls came back to tie the game at 26 apiece. A kill by McAnelly tied the game at 31-all but Rice went on to win off of back-to-back kills to go ahead 2-0 in the match.
Houston came out strong after the break to take a 5-0 lead only to watch Rice go on a 7-1 run to take the lead at 12-7. The Cougars could not recover after falling behind and Rice closed out the match with a 30-20.
The Cougars travel this weekend to the University of Arkansas Tournament where they will face No. 9 Illinois, Arkansas and Ball State this Friday and Saturday.
