Houston - The University of Houston women's volleyball team will have a new home for the 2004 season, the Athletics/Alumni Center, while Hofheinz Pavilion gets a new floor.
The decision to redo the floor was made earlier this month and since then, the Athletic Department has been working to make sure the Athletics/Alumni Center is still a great place for Cougar fans.
"We have all been working to create the best atmosphere possible," said Diane Hall, senior women's administrator. "We feel this will provide a more intimate setting that will be enjoyable for spectators."
Fans attending the volleyball games will be within a few feet of the action, making for a close, action-packed venue.
For now the move is temporary, but the possibility of a permanent move will be evaluated at the end of the season.
"Ideally, we would love to have the resources to build a facility that would accommodate volleyball and about 1,500-3,000 fans," said Hall.
Should the Cougars advance to the postseason, Hofheinz will be ready to host the opening rounds of any postseason tournament.
Hofheinz Pavilion, the home for Cougar basketball and volleyball, is having the entire main floor area redone to make a completely wooden surface instead of the removable floor that until now has been surrounded by cement and carpet.
The Cougars open up the 2004 season hosting the UH Tournament Friday-Sunday, Sept. 3-5, in the Athletics/Alumni Center.
