HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball program announced the hiring of Gabi Carbone as the newest member of the coaching staff. Carbone rejoins the Cougar volleyball program, where she spent two seasons as a player and one season as a graduate assistant coach.
After graduating from UH in spring 2003 Carbone coached volleyball and soccer at Houston Christian High School, leading her soccer team to a third-place finish in the state tournament. She has also coached club volleyball for four years.
"I'm very excited," Carbone said. "This is something I've always wanted. I love working with Bill (Walton) and I loved playing for him and I think we are going to have an exciting year."
As a player for head coach Bill Walton in 2000-01, Carbone set records for digs per game with 3.55 and service aces per game with 0.39. She finished her playing career with 756 digs and 74 service aces.
Carbone will be responsible for recruiting, team travel, camps and clinics and on court coaching.
"We're hoping Gabi's defensive skills translate into improved team defense as well as improved individual defense for our players," Walton said. "Her energy, enthusiasm and personality will be a major asset to this team."
