HOUSTON - University of Houston women's soccer head coach Bill Solberg recently announced the signing of high school senior Kourtney Ray (Norman, Okla.-Norman North HS) to a National Letter of Intent. Ray will join the Cougars for the 2003 season and will add depth to the Houston squad as a defender.
"Kourtney fills the stopper position for us and adds a dimension we haven't really had at UH - she dominates the air," Solberg said. She has the ability to win defensive headers and get forward to score with her head off serves and corners. She is a hard-nosed defender who has yet to realize how good she really is - and is an amazing addition to this team."
A native of Norman, Okla., Ray earned all-conference, all-district and all-state honors at Norman North High School under head coach Jay Coleman. Ray currently plays club soccer for the nationally-known Oklahoma Fury, which is coached by Jane Remy.
She also excelled in basketball and volleyball and was involved in various leadership and volunteer organizations at Norman North.
Ray's athleticism is evidenced by her family's background in sports. Her father, Darrol, played professional football with the New York Jets and uncle, Terry Ray, also spent seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots and is currently with the Canadian Football League.
Her mother, Diane, played basketball at Oklahoma and her sister, Kendall excelled in the sport for two years at Rose State College.
"Kourtney will make this team an immediate contender to win the conference," Solberg said. "We watched her play several games recently and we think she has not only grown but has gotten better. She has a great presence in the middle of the field."
Ray, who was also recruited by Arkansas, plans to major in marketing at UH this fall.
