Fastpitch Routs Texas Southern 25-0 and 11-3

HOUSTON - Cougar batters tallied 36 hits including nine homeruns as the University of Houston softball team routed Third Ward foe Texas Southern 25-0 and 11-3 in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
With the wins, Houston improves to 33-18 overall and is third in Conference USA with a 13-5 league record.
As a team, the Cougars rewrote the school record books in game one for runs scored (25), hits (24), RBI (21) and homeruns (six).
Houston also surpassed the C-USA record for homeruns in a single season (50), set by Southern Miss in 2000. The Cougars' team homerun total sits at 53 with six regular season games remaining.
The Cougars posted three runs in the first and second innings to take a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the third in game one. Houston batters posted 14 hits and scored 16 runs on the three Texas Southern errors to lead 21-0 after three innings.
The offense continued its assault in the fourth inning, adding three runs on four hits. Houston held the Tigers scoreless though the top of the fifth inning to pick up the 25-0 win.
Arelis Ferreris led the Cougars in game one with three hits (two of them homeruns) for a school-record seven RBI. Amber King went 4-5 for four RBI and hit her third homerun of the year. Kim Nesloney added three hits while Jenny Baker, Kristen Glowacz, Jenilee Skender, Michelle Keith, Michelle Whipple and Brandi Clark each added two hits apiece.
In addition to Ferreris and King, homeruns were recorded by Glowacz (12th), Keith (5th), Clark (2nd) and Cougar pitcher Jenny Johnson (1st).
Freshman hurler Crystal Briscoe (9-4) allowed only two hits, struck out eight and faced 18 batters to pick up her ninth career win.
Cougar batters led off game two with three hits for four runs in the first inning. Texas Southern threatened in the top of the third with five hits to put three runs on the board. Houston pitcher Michelle Keith was relieved by Jamie Falco with two outs and struck out the final batter to keep the Tigers contained, 4-3.
Houston retaliated in the bottom of the fourth, knocking in six runs off seven hits. The Cougar defense performed a three-up, three-down top of the fifth to secure the win in five innings, 11-3.
Ferreris, Clark, Glowacz and Nesloney each added two hits in the win. Clark and Glowacz each hit their second homerun of the day while freshman Brooke Johnson hit her second of the season.
Junior Jamie Falco (12-8) picked up the win, striking out three and allowing only one hit in 2.1 innings.
Houston will hit the road for a three-game conference series with Louisville beginning Saturday at 1 p.m.
