HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team swept Saint Louis in a Conference USA doubleheader Sunday at the Cougar Softball Stadium. The Cougars held the Billikens to only one run in both games, winning 2-1 and 9-0 to improve their C-USA record to 5-0.
With the win the Cougars improve to 17-10 overall and have won 12 of their last 14 games. The Billikens, who had their first 15 games cancelled due to inclement weather, are 0-2 overall and in C-USA play.
Juniors Jamie Falco (8-3) and Jenny Johnson (5-4) each pitched complete games and picked up wins for the Cougars.
Saint Louis pitcher Nicole Bohnenstiehl doubled to right field to bring home Melissa Quist in the first inning of Game One for the Billikens' only run of the day. Both teams bats were silent until the bottom of the fifth when Jenilee Skender hit her fourth home run of the year to tie the game at 1-1.
The Billikens threatened with another Bohnenstiehl hit in the seventh inning but ended up leaving two on base. Michelle Keith stepped up to the plate in the eighth and knocked a homerun onto Scott Street to win the game for Houston, 2-1.
Falco gave up two hits and struck out four in eight innings of work to pick up her sixth consecutive win.
The Cougars jumped out to a quick start in Game Two, posting runs in the first and second innings. Jenny Baker walked to lead off and made her way around the bases before scoring on a Kristin Rossi wild pitch. Houston left three on base but would retaliate later in the contest.
Brooke Johnson scored on a throwing error in the second inning to increase the Houston lead to two. Kim Nesloney singled to bring home Lindsay Durham, before Kristin Glowacz homered to left field (her sixth of the year) for two RBI of her own.
Houston kept up the offensive charge in the fifth inning as Amber King hit her first homerun of the year to make it 5-0. Brooke Johnson, Durham and Nesloney each singled and Glowacz followed with a double to right center. The two runs were enough to put Houston over the five inning, eight-run rule, as it prevailed 9-0.
Jenny Johnson stuck out two and allowed three hits in five complete innings to improve her overall record to 5-4.
The Cougars return to Conference USA play tomorrow when they wrap up the Saint Louis series at 7 p.m. (originally scheduled for 1 p.m.) at the Cougar Softball Stadium. Houston is 5-0 in league play after sweeping Southern Miss last week.
