HOUSTON - The University of Houston softball team completed the series sweep of Conference USA rival Saint Louis as it prevailed 3-2 Monday night at the Cougar Softball Stadium. With the win - their eighth straight -- the Cougars improve their record to 18-10 and 6-0 in C-USA.
The Billikens, who had their first 15 games cancelled due to inclement weather, are 0-3 overall and in C-USA play.
Freshman Crystal Briscoe pitched four innings before junior Jamie Falco (8-3) took over in the fifth. Jenny Johnson (5-4) came in to relieve Falco in the sixth inning and held on to earn her second save of the year as Briscoe improved her record to 5-3.
Saint Louis' Nicole Bohnenstiehl, who made her second appearance and pitched her second complete game of the series, struck out six and gave up four hits in the loss.
Boosted by a Jaci Gonzalez single and a Jeanie Davis homerun, Houston jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. The long ball was the fourth of the year for Davis, who is hitting .393 on the season.
The Cougars picked up another run in the fourth as Arelis Ferreris and Kristen Glowacz advanced to second and third, respectively, on a sacrifice bunt by Jenilee Skender. Glowacz was tagged out at home as Michelle Keith reached on a fielder's choice, placing runners on first and third. Keith and Ferreris executed the double steal to bring the Cougars up by three, 3-0.
With runners on first and second, Falco came in to pitch for Briscoe in the fifth. Ashley Heady knocked in Beth Puttcamp with a single to center field to put the Billikens on the board with one out. Adrienne May hit a single of her own to score Adrienne Bogaars but Falco held off the next two batters to keep Houston up by one, 3-2 to close out the inning.
Saint Louis left two on base in the sixth inning and Johnson pitched a three-up three-down seventh to hold on to Houston's win and keep the win streak alive.
The Cougars will continue their 12-game home stand as they host the 2003 Crowne Plaza UH Round Robin this weekend. Houston, Boston University and Missouri are scheduled to participate in the two-day tournament to begin Saturday at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
