Houston, Texas - The University of Houston continued their winning ways of late, sweeping a doubleheader from Louisiana Tech this afternoon at the Cougar Softball Complex. Houston held the Lady Techsters scoreless in both contests, winning 2-0 and 6-0.
With the win the Cougars improve to 15-10 on the season and have won 10 of their last 12 games. Louisiana Tech falls to 4-16.
All three Houston pitchers saw action today, with Jenny Johnson throwing a one-hit shutout in game one, and Jamie Falco and Crystal Briscoe combining to hold Louisiana Tech to three hits and no runs.
In game one the Cougars broke through in the first inning after two outs. Jeanie Davis and Kristen Glowacz coaxed back-to-back walks, and then Arelis Ferreris ripped a double to leftfield to score Davis. The Houston threat would end there, even after Jenilee Skender walked to load the bases, as Candis Turnbo popped up to the first baseman to end the inning.
That would be all the Cougar scoring until the sixth inning, when Skender hit a one-out home run to dead center. It was the third round-tripper of the season for Skender.
After struggling in the first inning and escaping a slight jam, Johnson settled into a grove and started to mow down the Louisiana Tech batters. At one point Johnson retired 16 straight batters before La Tech shortstop Casey Reiff reached first on a Jaci Gonzalez error to begin the seventh inning. Johnson composed herself and retired the next three batters, including two via the strikeout.
Johnson improved to 4-4 on the season, working seven innings and striking out seven to record her fourth complete game of the season.
The nightcap was a different story, as the Cougars scored four runs in the first three innings to take control of the game. Kim Nesloney hit a one-out home run in the first inning - her first of the season - and Lindsay Durham scored on a Lady Techster error in the second. In the third Glowacz deposited her fifth home to dead center to begin the inning, and then the Cougars scored another run when Amber King singled home Brandi Clark, who had replaced Skender.
In the sixth Houston tacked on two more insurance runs. Michelle Whipple singled up the middle to start the frame and then promptly stole second. After Durham sacrificed Whipple to third, Nesloney's reached and Whipple scored on an error by Reiff. Melissa Lynch brought Nesloney home on a double to right center.
Falco faced the minimum batters over five innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five. Briscoe pitched the final two innings and allowed two hits and struck out two.
The Cougars return to Conference USA tomorrow, when they play host to Saint Louis in a doubleheader beginning at 1 pm. UH is 3-0 in league play after sweeping Southern Miss earlier in the week.
