University of Houston women's basketball senior Chandi Jones has earned Conference USA Player of the Week honors for the period ending Nov. 23, after leading the Cougars to the KCRG-TV 9 Hawkeye Challenge championship title with victories over Gonzaga and host Iowa, it was announced today by the Conference USA office.
Jones scored 25 points against the Bulldogs, while picking up five steals and three rebounds. Against the Hawkeyes in the tournament championship game, she put up a game-high 34 points, including four three-pointers, along with nine rebounds and three steals.
More impressively, Jones, the C-USA Player of the Year the last two seasons who was picked in the pre-season to win the award an unprecedented three straight times this year, became the third-fastest player in NCAA history to reach 2,000 points in her career when she hit a free throw with 16:07 remaining in the second half of the Lady Cougars' win over Iowa.
Jones has reached the 2,000-point milestone in just 84 games, one more game than Southwest Missouri State's Jackie Stiles and behind Lynette Woods of Kansas, who reached the mark in 70 games.
Last season, Jones, who is among the national watch lists for the John R. Wooden Award and Naismith Award, led the nation in scoring with 27.5 points per game and so far this season in the Lady Cougars first two games she is averaging 29.5 points per game.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Jones this season and the eighth overall for her career.
