IOWA CITY, IA - University of Houston senior Chandi Jones became the third fastest player in NCAA history to reach 2,000 points in her career when she hit a free throw with 16:07 remaining in the second half of the Lady Cougars game against the University of Iowa Saturday night at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
Jones finished the game with 34 points as the Lady Cougars beat the Hawkeyes 70-64 in the championship game of the KCRG TV9 Hawkeye Challenge.
"It feels great", Jones said. "Actually I didn't think about it today, actually I forgot about it until I hit the shot and heard the announcer come on and say something about it. I didn't really get excited at the time because we were in a battle, but I'm very excited about it now that we got the win."
Jones reached the 2,000 point milestone in just 84 games, one more game than Southwest Missouri State's Jackie Stiles and behind Lynette Woods of Kansas who reached the mark in 70 games.
Last season Jones led the nation in scoring with 27.5 points per game and so far this season in the Lady Cougars first two games she is averaging 29.5 points per game.
University of Houston head coach Joe Curl said Jones' accomplishment is a great thing for her and for the Lady Cougars team.
"I'm very proud of her because she does it within the confines of the offense," Curl said. "She does get some of it one on one but that's part of our offense. Any time you have a great athlete you have to do that."
