Sophomore Anne Gasser led the offensive surge as the University of Houston women's soccer team scored four goals in the first half -- two in less than a minute -- as the Cougars halted their winless streak against North Texas and defeated the Mean Green by a final of 4-1 on Friday (Sept. 13) night at Robertson Stadium.
The victory was Houston's sixth straight at home dating back to last season, which is the second-longest home winning streak in school history behind the 11-game home streak from 1998-99.
Junior Nicole Aubuchon passed the ball to freshman Kelly Golden, who blasted the ball into the left corner past UNT goalie Erin Johnson for the Cougars' first goal on the night in the 19th minute.
Less than two minutes later, with an assist from sophomore Nikki Hawkins, Gasser registered Houston's second score with her second shot-on-goal of the night. Then roughly 30 seconds later, freshman Sara Hemmer scored Houston's third goal, with an assist from senior Ashley Fortenberry.
In the 34th minute, freshman Beth Outlaw put in Houston's final goal as she pushed one by Johnson.
After carrying a 4-0 lead into the locker room at half-time, the Cougars maintained a great defensive effort, speared by junior transfer Alison Sinclair and junior Emily Allwardt, and held UNT scoreless until the 85th minute, when the Mean Green's Krista Georgas sailed a header past Houston goalie Erin Ferguson on a corner kick from Marilyn Marin.
The four goals scored by Houston are the most since defeating Louisville, 4-0, on Oct. 1, 2000, at Robertson Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars even their season record to 2-2-0. They continue this current four-game homestand against the visiting UL Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns on Sunday, Sept. 15, at Robertson Stadium with a 1:00 p.m. kick-off.
