Freshman Meghan Moreo knocked in the winning goal past UL Lafayette goalie Liza Presault on a corner kick from senior Ashley Fortenberry in the 97th minute as the University of Houston women's soccer team defeated the visiting Ragin' Cajuns by a final of 2-1 in the first sudden death overtime on a soggy field at Robertson Stadium.
The victory was Houston's seventh straight at home dating back to last season, which is the second-longest home winning streak in school history behind the 11-game home streak from 1998-99.
After an hour-and-a-half rain delay, the Cougars and Ragin' Cajuns kicked off, with Houston dominating the defensive front thanks to junior college transfer Alison Sinclair, junior Emily Allwardt and Fortenberry, who scored the Cougars' first goal when she single-handedly sailed the ball past Presault in the second minute of regulation.
The Cougars carried a 1-0 advantage into the locker room at half-time, and held UL Lafayette scoreless until the 74th minute when Sara Vienberg tied the score 1-1 on a penalty kick that got by Houston goalie Erin Ferguson.
Just seven minutes into the first overtime, Fortenberry went to the sidelines to kick the ball in as both teams lined up in front of the goal. Wide open and not guarded, Moreo knocked in the winning goal.
Along with Fortenbery, freshman Kelly Golden also added four shots-on-goal, while sophomore Nikki Hawkins, freshman Sara Hemmer and junior Nicole Aubuchon each added three on the day.
With the win, the Cougars improve their season record to 3-2-0. They continue this current four-game home stand and begin league play against the visiting Charlotte 49ers on Friday, Sept. 20, at Robertson Stadium with kick-off slated for a 7:00 p.m.
