Dano Holcomb, a veteran in the field of collegiate soccer, has been named an assistant coach for the University of Houston women's soccer team, it was announced by head coach Bill Solberg.
"Dano is one of the best coaches around," said Solberg. "It's tough to put into words how excited and honored we are to have him on staff. Without a doubt he'll make us better."
Holcomb arrives in Houston after having spent last season with Conference USA rival Tulane, where he was responsible for coaching the goalkeepers. He was also a member of the Louisiana ODP staff in 2001-02.
He was also a staff coach for LaFreniere Soccer Club working with the U-14 and U-15 girls teams. The U-14 team won the Louisiana State Championship in 2002, while the U-15 finished runner-up.
Prior to his one-year stint on the Green Wave staff, Holcomb spent two years as the men's and women's assistant coach at Marquette University. During his stay in Milwaukee, he helped lead the Golden Eagles women's program to a pair of Conference USA tournament titles and the 2000 regular season championship.
In addition, the women's team advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and 2000, winning its first round game each year. In 2000, the Marquette men were ranked as high as seventh in the national polls, while the women's team were ranked as high as 17th.
Prior to joining the staff at Marquette, Holcomb was an assistant coach with the women's team at his alma mater, UNC Asheville, from 1995 to 1998. He helped lead the UNCA team to the 1995 Big South Tournament championship and a pair of runner-up finishes in 1996 and 1998.
While working with both the men's and women's goalkeepers at UNCA, he coached seven goalkeepers to first-team All-Big South honors, including five on the women's team.
During his two seasons at Marquette, Holcomb was involved in the Wisconsin Olympic Development Program, coaching both girls and boys teams. He also coached the goalkeepers for the Milwaukee Nationals club team (formerly the Kickers).
Holcomb played collegiately at UNC Asheville from 1989-1991, ranking as the team's second-leading goal scorer in 1991. He also played with the South Carolina Shamrocks of the U.S.I.S.L.
Holcomb currently holds a "C" coaching license from the United States Soccer Federation and has his Goalkeeping Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA).
