Houston, Texas - The University of Houston Women's Soccer Team participated in its first spring match after losing its 10 seniors from the fall. The Cougars defeated the Gentlemen of Centenary by a score of 3-1.
It didn't take long for the Cougars to get on the scoreboard, as Ashley Fortenberry sent in a corner kick that Nicole Aubuchon redirected to Nikki Hawkins who finished the opportunity.
The rest of the first half was getting used to some new faces in the line-up and being able to read each other. One new face, a transfer from Clemson, Alison Sinclair, helped to secure the back line as well as posed a threat going forward, something the Cougars would like to do more of.
At halftime the score was tied 1-1. The Cougars made some adjustments and picked up the level of intensity in the second half. Freshman Leslie Guevara gave the Cougars the lead as she took an assist from Nicole Aubuchon and found herself one on one with the goalie, when she found the side net to put the Cougars in the lead.
From then on, there was no looking back. Ashley Fortenberry hit a rocket past the diving Centenary keeper to put the score at 3-1. The final goal again was a corner kick by Fortenberry that was bent to the inside of the near post and snuck in the net.
The back line, led by captain Emily Allwardt tightened up in the second half allowing Centenary few chances to get to the final third of the Cougars defensive end.
Overall, a nice first outing for the soccer team
