Golf in 13th Place after First Day of Waikoloa Intercollegiate

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii - University of Houston golfer Scott Ferguson fired a 1-under-par 71 during the first round of the Waikoloa Intercollegiate on Wednesday to stand in a tie for 13th place.
The tournament continues with 18 holes scheduled for Thursday and concludes with Friday's final round.
Ferguson tied for the day's top honors with a 33 on the front nine and was only four strokes off the overall lead, held by Georgia Tech's Troy Matteson and Oregon's Aaron Byers who each shot 67.
As a team, the Cougars tied for 13th with Oregon State at 293. Georgia Tech stood atop the standings after shooting 281 as a team, while Stanford was second at 285. Mississippi, Pepperdine, Nevada and Fresno State rounded out the top six leaders.
UH sophomore Brad McIntosh, the 2001 Conference USA Tournament individual champion, shot even-par 72 to stand in a tie for 23rd place.
Other Cougar linksters were Simon Robinson (75, t-65th), Brett Callas (75, t-65th) and Daniel Angenscheidt (77, t-98th).
