HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team will look to improve its 12-6 overall and 3-1 Conference USA record this week against SMU, South Florida and UAB at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars will face the Mustangs (8-12, 2-4 WAC) Wednesday, the Bulls (19-5, 6-0 C-USA) Friday and the Blazers (9-13, 2-5 C-USA) Saturday at Hofheinz. All matches are slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
The non-conference SMU match will be designated "Karasek Night," as Cougar outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek (Caldwell, Texas-Caldwell) will compete against her younger sister, Beth, a member of the Mustang squad.
The Cougars will resume C-USA play Friday against South Florida, who currently sits at the top of the conference standings. The Bulls are coached by Nancy Mueller, a former assistant coach at Houston under Bill Walton from 1995-99. Houston leads the series against South Florida 8-5. UAB is looking for its first victory over Houston, and will try to do so Saturday night as Houston wraps up its five-match home stand.
Houston is led by middle hitter Jenny Tanneberger (San Antonio-Univ. of Texas), whose 41-kill performance on Oct. 12 broke the school record and tied the C-USA mark and Division I 2002 match-high for kills. She was named C-USA Co-Player of the Week on Oct. 14, her second weekly conference honor in 2002.
Houston will travel north to DePaul and Marquette in November to continue C-USA play. The Cougars will face the Blue Demons Nov. 1 and the Golden Eagles Nov. 2 at 7 p.m.
