HOUSTON - The University of Houston volleyball team will continue its campaign for a 21st consecutive winning season Oct. 17 against cross-town rival Rice and Oct. 18 against Conference USA opponent TCU at Hofheinz Pavilion.
The Cougars (11-5, 2-1 C-USA) will face the Owls (10-9, 2-3 WAC) tomorrow and the Horned Frogs (9-11, 1-3 C-USA) Friday at Hofheinz. Both matches are slated to begin at 7:30 p.m.
Houston met both squads earlier this season in the Crowne Plaza/Rice Invitational hosted by the Owls Sept. 6-7. The Cougars defeated the Horned Frogs on Sept. 6 in three games and now lead the series 3-1. More than 500 fans packed into Autry Court to watch Houston defeat Rice 3-1 in the tournament championship match on Sept. 7. Houston leads the series against Rice 53-5.
The Cougar's five-match home stand will wrap up with non-conference opponent SMU on Oct. 23, C-USA powerhouse South Florida on Oct. 25 and UAB on Oct. 26. The SMU match will be designated "Karasek Night," as Cougar outside hitter Jane Anne Karasek (Caldwell-Caldwell) will compete against her younger sister, Beth, a member of the Mustang squad.
Houston is led by middle hitter Jenny Tanneberger (San Antonio-Univ. of Texas), whose 41-kill performance on Oct. 12 broke the school record and tied the C-USA mark and Division I 2002 match-high for kills. She was named C-USA Co-Player of the Week on Oct. 14, her second weekly conference honor in 2002.
