FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The University of Houston volleyball team posted a tough pair of wins over teams that both made the NCAA Tournament last season in Saturday's action at the Bank of Fayetteville Invitational in Arkansas. The Cougars defeated tournament host Arkansas and Virginia by identical scores of three games to one to improve to 6-3 on the season.
After defeating SEC power Arkansas 15-11, 15-13, 15-17, 15-10 to snap the Lady Razorbacks' streak of 20-consecutive regular season wins at home in Barnhill Arena, the Cougars came right back from that afternoon match and played Virginia in the tournament's round-robin format less than two hours later. Houston jumped out to a 15-4 win over the Caveliers in game one, but had to fight fatigue the rest of the way to claim a 7-15, 15-4, 16-14 decision.
The Cougars were led in both matches by senior hitters Jennifer Wittenburg and Bobbi Stewart. Wittenburg recorded a career-high 34 kills and 20 defensive digs over the Lady Razorbacks and then came right back with 25 kills, a .296 hitting percentage and 16 digs against Virginia. Stewart spiked 27 kills against Arkansas and another 11 in the second match.
Houston improved to 6-3 overall. The Cougars will next be in action in its Conference USA season-opener against South Florida on the road in Tampa on Tuesday, September 19.
