Octavia Barnes joined the Houston Women's Basketball staff ahead of the 2022-23 season in a player development role. In this role, Barnes mentors and motivates athletes by breaking down film and creating specific workout plans. Barnes helped in the development of guard Laila Blair to earn First Team All-American Athletic Conference Honors (2022-23) and All-Big 12 Honorable Mention Honors (2023-24). Barnes also helps in the promotion and organization of summer camps hosted by the team.
The former Cougar finished her playing career in Houston, finishing the 2017-18 season as the Cougars’ fifth-leading scorer and 2018-19 season as the fourth-leading scorer. The Cougars made the WNIT in both of Barnes' years as a student-athlete, including the Cougars’ first postseason berth since 2011.
Originally from Utica, Miss., Barnes graduated in May 2019 from the University of Houston where she earned her bachelor of science in sociology and minor in health.
