Alan Bishop joined the University of Houston Men’s Basketball program as its director of sports performance in May 2017.
In that role, Bishop plans and coordinates strength and conditioning programs for the team and for individual student-athletes to perform at their highest levels, both physically and mentally.
During his time at Houston, Bishop has been a key part of teams which have won 243 games, captured nine Big 12/American Athletic Conference championships and appeared in seven straight NCAA Tournaments, including the Elite Eight in 2022, the Final Four in 2025 and 2021 and the Sweet 16 in 2019, 2023 and 2024.
Bishop came to Houston after spending the previous four seasons at Utah State. He spent his first three seasons with the Aggies as an assistant coach on the Sports Performance staff before being elevated to director of Olympic sport strength and conditioning coach in 2016.
During the 2012-13 season, Bishop worked as the basketball head strength and conditioning coach at UT Arlington. That season, he helped lead the Mavericks to a 19-14 overall record and a berth in the CollegeInsider.com Tournament after the team competed in the WAC Tournament championship game.
He also served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Southern Utah from 2010 to 2012.
Bishop graduated from Utah State in 2009 with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and earned his master’s degree in sports conditioning and performance from Southern Utah in 2013.
As an undergraduate, Bishop was a four-year letterman on the defensive line for Utah State from 2005 to 2009. He was a four-time Academic All-Conference honoree and was a five-time Whiteside Scholar for finishing with a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher each year.
He holds certification through the NSCA, USAW and also is a certified BioPrint practitioner and a certified Kinetic Chain Enhancement Specialist.
Bishop and his wife, Jessica, have a daughter, Jayda, and a son, A.J.
