Houston freshman point guard receives latest All-America recognition
HOUSTON – University of Houston point guard Kingston Flemings was named to the John R. Wooden Award presented by Principal All-America Team, the latest postseason recognition for the freshman. This was the latest All-America accolade for the Cougar star. He was named to NABC, USBWA, The Sporting News Field of 68 and Andy Katz All-America Second Teams earlier this month.
Flemings is the first Cougar freshman to receive All-America recognition. Prior to this season, Houston greats Clyde Drexler, Rob Williams, Hakeem Olajuwon and Craig Upchurch were the youngest Cougars (by class) to receive All-America status.
Upchurch was the most recent sophomore to be honored as an All-American, receiving Honorable Mention in 1989. Olajuwon was a Third-Team honoree by Basketball Times and an AP and UPI Honorable Mention in 1983, and Drexler was named The Sporting News Honorable Mention in 1982, Williams was named to the Third Team by the Associated Press in 1981.
Tuesday's announcement was made on ESPN2 during the Wooden Award Finalists Show.
The selection process was overseen by a National Advisory Board, which compiles a National Ballot featuring the top candidates who meet the award's criteria, including a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00. This ballot is distributed to a panel of voters composed of sportswriters and sportscasters from across the country. Deloitte collects and verifies these votes to maintain the integrity and accuracy of the final results.
