Judson Hunter joined the Houston Football staff as a Special Teams/Specialsts Assistant ahead of the 2025 season after one season at the University of Charleston in 2023 as the running backs and tight ends coach.
In 2023, Hunter helped the Charleston achieve the ninth best rushing attack in the nation in the program’s greatest overall season to date, winning its first ever Mountain East Conference Championship and earning its first playoff win in program history. The offense ranked in the top ten in several major offensive categories, including fourth in the nation in scoring (44.0 ppg). Both Charleston’s starting Running Back Chavon Wright and starting Tight End both received First-Team All-MEC awards, with Chavon Wright also being named the MEC Offensive Player of the Year. Running Back Alex Brink also received All-MEC Honorable Mention and led the nation in yards per carry.
Hunter began his D1 coaching career at Middle Tennessee State where he assisted with the wide receivers, special teams/specialists, and worked as a recruiting analyst. After the 2022 season, Hunter joined the University of Charleston as the running backs and tight ends coach as well as specialists coach, while also coordinating the kickoff unit and holding video coordinator duties.
In 2022, Hunter was a part of Middle Tennessee’s first program victory against an AP Top-25 team, beating #24 Miami at Hard Rock Stadium. Middle Tennessee finished the 2022 season with one of the top special teams units in the country. Middle Tennessee finished fifth in the nation for Special Teams Efficiency for 2022, according to ESPN FPI.
With Hunter's help, Middle Tennessee saw their starting punter and long snapper named First Team All-Conference and their primary punt returner receive Second Team All-Conference Honors. Middle Tennessee boasted a C-USA Special Teams Player of the Year Finalist in Ralph Mency. Also, MTSU boasted the CFN 2022 All-American Special Teams Player in Yusuf Ali. Their Special Teams unit tied for 2nd in the country in blocked kicks recording 6 in 2022 & tied for 3rd in the country in blocked punts with 4, as well as being 12th in the country in Net Punting (41.88). Overall, the program finished in the Top 50 in Punt Return, Combined Kick Returns, and Field Goal %.
Hunter earned Player of the Year his senior season at East Coweta High School in Sharpsburg, Ga., before continuing his career at Geneva College in Beaver Falls, Pa.
Following his playing career, Hunter began his coaching career as the offensive and defensive pass-game coordinator at Houston County High School (TN) where the program made their first playoff appearance since 2003 and first playoff victory since 1989, finishing the 2012 season 7-4.
In between coaching at Houston County High and Middle Tennessee State, Hunter served in the United States Marine Corps where he served as an Infantry Assaultman and Squad Leader with 3rd Battalion, 8th Marines, and 1st Battalion, 6th Marines, spending time overseas and finishing his service in 2021.
