GAME SUMMARY
After Kansas State grabbed the lead with a grand slam in the first inning, Houston answered with a three-run homer off the bat of LaLima to keep it a one-run game in the second.
Â
The Wildcats pushed its edge back to two as Ty Smolinski scored on an error off a pickoff attempt to put the score at 5-3 in the fourth, but Houston quickly cut its deficit back to one in the fifth. With a pair of runners in scoring position, freshman Blake Fields used a sacrifice fly to drive home Broussard.
Â
Houston tied the game in the sixth with a solo homer from Cox, his first home run as a Cougar.Â
Â
Following a scoreless seventh, the Wildcats briefly reclaimed the lead with an RBI single off the bat of Carlos Vasquez, but Houston took the game in the bottom of the inning. Sophomore McClane Helton led off the inning with a single to second then stole second to put a runner in scoring position. Cox tied the game for a second time as he laced a single into left-center, evening the score at 6-6.Â
Â
Perez advanced Cox to second with a sacrifice bunt but the Wildcats opted to intentionally walk Broussard to put a second runner on base. After junior Riley Jackson was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Maxcey hit his second double of the season to plate Cox and Broussard with pinch-runner freshman Will Van Wie moving up to third, giving Houston its first lead of the game at 8-6.Â
Â
Savattere singled in the next at-bat to drive home both Van Wie and Maxcey, extending the lead to four. Fields was hit by a pitch to put a pair of Cougars on base and both advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch to continue the threat. LaLima picked up his fourth RBI of the game as he drove home Savattere with a sacrifice fly to center field, narrowly missing his second homer of the game.
Â
Helton, batting for the second time in the frame, kept the rally going with a two-out single that plated Fields, and after Cox was hit by a pitch to put another runner on base, Perez ripped a double that one-hopped the wall to score both Helton and Cox.
Â
Broussard capped the crooked frame and handed Houston the win as he hit his second homer of the season off the batter's eye in center field, activating the run rule and giving the Cougars a 16-6 victory.Â
