Men’s Golf in Second Following First Day at Thunderbird Collegiate

Senior Jacob Borow tied for fourth at 8-under 134; Junior Hudson Weibel joins him among Top-10 leaders
PHOENIX, Ariz. & BRYAN-COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The University of Houston Men's Golf program stood in second place with a score of 21-under 547 following the first day of the Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Golf Club on Friday.
After opening the morning with a score of 271, the Cougars followed with a total of 276 in the afternoon to finish the first 36 holes 21-under 547, 10 strokes behind #5 and host Arizona State on the 7,419-yard, par-71 course.
Senior Jacob Borow stood in fourth with a score of 8-under 134 while junior Hudson Weibel finished eighth at 136.
Borow began the First Round with bogey at No. 10, but that would be the last blemish on his scorecard in the morning. He returned to even par with a birdie at the par-4 12th hole and then drained three birdies in a four-hole stretch at Nos. 15-18.
Following another birdie at No. 1, the Lake Jackson, Texas, native added birdies at No. 5 and No. 7 before closing the round with consecutive pars for a 65.
With his score, Borow equaled his career low set during the Second Round of the HCU Colin Montgomerie Invitational on March 4, 2024.
Weibel opened the tournament with a 69 in the morning and followed that with a bogey-free 67 in the afternoon.
Starting off No. 10 in the afternoon, Weibel drained back-to-back birdies on Nos. 12-13 and added the third birdie of his back nine at No. 17. He added one more birdie in his round at No. 4 to finish the first day at 135.
Sophomore Chi Chun Chen was tied for 22nd at 139 while senior Wolfgang Glawe and senior Laurenz Schiergen were tied for 29th at 140. Playing as an individual, junior Bryant Hiskey II was tied for 39th at 143.
Grand Canyon stood in third at 548 while #33 Colorado (550) and #49 New Mexico (551), #10 UCLA (551) and Utah (551) rounded out the Top-Five leaders.
Loyola Marymount's Mason Snyder held the first-day lead at 132. Arizona State teammates Preston Summerhays and Pongsapak Laopakee were tied for second at 133 while Carson Herron (New Mexico), Pabo Ereno (UCLA) and Gabriel Palacios (Utah) joined Borow in fourth at 134.
AGGIE INVITATIONAL
Sophomore Grant Doggett and freshman Hsuan-Yi Chen will compete as individuals at the Aggie Invitational at Traditions Club in Bryan-College Station, Texas with 36 holes set for Saturday and the Final Round teeing off Sunday morning.
The Cougar duo will face student-athletes from UTSA, Louisiana, New Mexico State, Tarleton State, Rice, Louisiana Tech, Sam Houston, Lamar, Oklahoma, North Texas, Baylor and host Texas A&M.
