Cougars pick up first point in Big 12 play, fall to Jayhawks, 4-1
HOUSTON – Junior Sophie Schouten picked up a singles point as the University of Houston Tennis team fell, 4-1 to #40 Kansas on Friday afternoon at the Barbara Wallace Winston Tennis Facility.
Kansas (9-6, 3-2 Big 12) had an early advantage in doubles as the Cougars (3-8, 0-5 Big 12) forfeited court three in doubles.
The Jayhawks needed just one court to clinch the doubles point, and Jasmine Adams and Yerke Arystanbekova defeated sophomores Iva Sepa and Valeriia Krokhotina, 6-3, on court two.
Making their debut on court one, Schouten and junior partner Gabriela Cortes held a 5-4 lead before the match was abandoned.
Kansas quickly doubled its lead when Kyoka Kubo routed sophomore Heta Nuutinen, 6-1, 6-1, on court three.
Houston got on the board for the first time in Big 12 play this season as Schouten knocked off Adams, 6-4, 6-0, on court five.
He Janse van Vuuren put the Jayhawks within one as she defeated Krokhotina, 6-4, 6-3, on court four.
Kansas clinched the match as fifth-year Santa Strombacha dropped her first match of the season to Gracie Mulville, 6-4, 6-4.
