Lott Shines vs. Former Team; Sabathia Slaps Game-Winning Hit

HOUSTON – With two outs in the eighth inning trailing 3-2, junior Carsten Sabathia delivered the biggest hit of his collegiate career to give Houston a 4-3 lead against Sam Houston on Friday night. The Cougars would close out the win for their first win of the Don Sanders Cup series at Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park.

Houston (5-2) trailed 3-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning before senior Malachi Lott hit his first home run of the season – against his former team – to get the Cougars on the scoreboard.

The Cougars used five different pitchers on the night with Lott (1-0) spinning a pair of scoreless one-hit innings on his way to his first win. All five Cougar pitchers struck out multiple Bearkat hitters with freshman Chris Perez striking out the side in his lone inning of work. Lott is the first Cougar player since Brad Lincoln in 2006 to hit a home run and pitch to a win in the same game.

Junior Connor McGinnis hit his second home run in as many games in the sixth to pull Houston within a run. McGinnis ended the game with his third multi-hit game of the season.

In the eighth inning, sophomore Tre Broussard reached on a two-base fielding error to lead off the inning and junior Cade Climie walked before Sabathia delivered a double that dropped in in front of a Sam Houston (2-6) diving left fielder scoring both Broussard and Climie.

Houston's 12 strikeouts are the second most this season while the Cougar staff gave up just one walk – a season-best.

In his fifth save opportunity, sophomore Richie Roman (5) delivered with a pair of strikeouts before inducing a game ending fly out for his fifth save of the year.

NEXT UP
The Cougars return to the road and head north for a three-game series at UT Arlington Friday-Sunday. All three games will be streamed on ESPN+ with the series opener beginning at 4 p.m.
