Broussard, Climie, McGinnis Power Cougars Series Win

BERKELEY, Calif. – Sophomore Tre Broussard and juniors Cade Climie and Connor McGinnis launched home runs as the Houston Baseball team won its second consecutive series to open the season by winning the rubber match at Cal, 7-4, on Sunday at Stu Gordon Stadium.

Houston (4-2) clubbed a season high three home runs. Broussard hit his first Division I home run in the third inning and Climie hit his first as a Cougar in the fifth inning. Climie's three-run home run was part of a four-run fifth.

In the eighth inning, McGinnis jumped on his second homer of the year to push Houston's lead to 7-1.

Houston sprayed a season-best 11 hits around the ballpark thanks to Broussard, Climie and McGinnis combining for eight hits.

On the mound, right-handed pitcher Graysen Drezek (1-0) earned the win after spinning 5.0 scoreless innings while only allowing two baserunners, both via hits. Left-hander Antoine Jean entered in the sixth out of the bullpen and did not allow a Cal (4-3) baserunner until the ninth inning, finishing with five strikeouts.

The Golden Bears scored three runs in the ninth on a home run, summoning closer Richie Roman out of the bullpen.

In his fourth save opportunity of the season, Roman (4) produced two strikeouts in his 0.2 innings of shutout work to give Houston it's second series win of the young season.

With the win, Houston has earned back-to-back series wins against Power 4/5 non-conference opponents to begin a season for the first time since sweeping Minnesota and sweeping #20 Alabama in 2015.

NEXT UP
The Cougars return to Don Sanders Field at Darryl and Lori Schroeder Park on Tuesday to open the Don Sander Cup against Sam Houston. Tuesday's 6:30 p.m. tilt is the lone home game against Sam Houston in 2025 before the Cougars play at Sam Houston on March 12 and then in Sugar Land, Texas, on March 18.
