Cougar starters play all 40 minutes in 70-56 loss to the Knights
ORLANDO, Fla. – With only six available players, the University of Houston Women's Basketball dropped its Big 12 Conference road battle, 70-56, against UCF on Saturday afternoon at Addition Financial Arena.
Every member of Houston's (5-17, 1-10 Big 12) starting five played all 40 minutes against the Knights (8-12, 1-9 Big 12), who earned their first league win of the season.
Graduate guard Laila Blair tallied her ninth-straight game scoring in double figures and the 16th of the season. Sophomore guard Summer Bostock made her first career start and tallied a career-high 12 points.
The Knights were led by senior guard Kaitlin Peterson's 28 points, with 21 points scored in the first half.
After UCF got on the board first with a single made free throw, the Cougars opened a 7-0 run with back-to-back three-point plays from Bostock and fifth-year forward Peyton McFarland. UCF quickly responded with six points of its own to square things at seven.
UCF took a brief 10-9 lead before Bostock and Blair knocked down two consecutive 3-pointers as the Cougars led, 15-12, at the end of the first quarter.
Peterson took over in the first half of the second stanza when she scored 13 straight points for UCF. Blair scored five points in the quarter as the Cougars trailed 31-26 at the intermission.
The Cougars came out of the locker room with an 8-3 burst before UCF took advantage of a nearly seven-minute Houston scoring drought with a 16-2 run and led 50-38 heading into the final 10 minutes of action.
A back-and-forth fourth quarter spearheaded by Blair's eight points would not be enough as UCF shot 53% (8-15) from the field.
UP NEXT
The Cougars return to Fertitta Center for a two-game homestand first against Baylor at 7 p.m., Wednesday, for National Girls & Women in Sports Day, followed by West Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m., for its Celebrate Black Excellence Game.
