Former Bearkats quarterback for Fritz set to lead wide receivers room
HOUSTON – University of Houston Football Head Coach Willie Fritz announced the promotion of Brian Bell to Wide Receivers Coach on Tuesday following two seasons as an Offensive Assistant working with the wide receivers.
Bell has worked on both sides of the ball at the collegiate level, working with the wide receivers at Houston and on the defensive side of the ball at Baylor.
"We are very excited about promoting Brian to Wide Receivers Coach," Fritz said. "Brian has done an outstanding job last two seasons and will continue to do excellent job with wide receivers. He has an extensive high school coaching background in Texas and our experience together at Sam Houston made this a natural fit.
At Houston, Bell helped tutor All-Big 12 selection Amare Thomas in 2025 and mentored a pair of freshmen wide receivers of Koby Young and Jaquise Martin who contributed 228 combined receiving yards on 15 combined catches. Young's 15.9 yards per catch ranked second on the squad while Martin's 13.8 yard per reception finished the regular season fourth on the team.
"I am so excited to have this opportunity in front of me" Bell said. "I am grateful for Coach Fritz and this football program for believing in me and I'm ready to get to work and continue elevating this wide receiver group."
Bell coached at his high school alma mater, China Spring, for six seasons, four as the head coach. In 2021, Bell led China Spring to its first state championship since 1978, doing so by capturing the Class 4A Division II state final with a 31-7 victory over Gilmer to cap an undefeated 16-0 season.
Bell compiled a 37-16 record in four seasons as a high school head coach of his alma mater after succeeding his father, Mark.
A four-year starting quarterback for Coach Fritz at Sam Houston, Bell is the Bearkats' all-time "winningest" quarterback, leading team to 39 victories in 53 starts. He finished his career with 8,655 passing yard, 84 passing touchdowns and 23 rushing touchdowns across four seasons.
