Cougars face Tigers at 2 p.m., Saturday, inside Fertitta Center
HOUSTON – After winning its season opener earlier this week, the #2/2 University of Houston Men's Basketball
program returns to action and continues its homestand when it plays host to Towson at 2 p.m., Saturday, inside Fertitta Center in a game presented by Raising Cane's.
The Fertitta Center will be a busy place on Saturday with Houston Women's Basketball meeting UTSA at 7 p.m. Fans who show their Men's Basketball tickets at the Fertitta Center box offices will receive a FREE ticket to the Women's Basketball game on Saturday night.
#2/2 Houston enters this weekend's game following a 75-57 win over Lehigh in the season opener on Monday night. Senior guard Emanuel Sharp posted 24 points with seven rebounds and three steals to lead the Cougars while senior point guard Milos Uzan added 12 points with five rebounds and five assists.
Sharp became the first Cougar to score 20+ points in a season opener since he finished with 20 points, thanks to four 3-pointers, in an 84-31 win over ULM inside Fertitta Center on Nov. 6, 2023.
With 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, freshman center/forward Chris Cenac Jr. recorded the Cougars' first double-double of the season and the first of his career. He became the first Cougar to post a double-double in his inaugural Houston game since forward George Williams totaled 15 points and 10 rebounds in an 81-59 win over Alaska-Fairbanks during the Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska, on Nov. 18, 1999.
800… and COUNTING
• With Monday's win over Lehigh, Houston Head Coach Kelvin Sampson reached a pair of special milestones.
• Monday's victory marked the 800th win in Sampson's award-winning career. It also was his 300th victory as the Cougars' head coach.
• Sampson became one of only 17 coaches in NCAA history (among coaches with 10+ years at Division I level) to reach 800 wins.
• Sampson now owns an 800-354 career record in more than 36 seasons to rank 17th in NCAA history in wins (among coaches with 10+ years at Division I). Up next in the NCAA records book is Rick Byrd, who compiled 805 wins from 1978 to 2021 at Belmont, Lincoln Memorial and Maryville (Tenn.).
• He is the fourth-winningest active coach with Tennessee's Rick Barnes (837), Arkansas' John Calipari (836) and Kansas' Bill Self (817).
