Women’s Basketball Drops Baha Mar Opener Against Arkansas State

Cougars resume action against Tulsa on Sunday
NASSAU, Bahamas – University of Houston Women's Basketball opened the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship Goombay Division with an 83-66 loss against Arkansas State on Friday inside the Baha Mar Convention Center. The Cougars will face Tulsa in the consolation match at 10 a.m., Sunday.
Houston (4-3) had two scorers in double figures as senior guard TK Pitts led with 12 points and freshman forward Jade Jones added 11. Arkansas State (4-3) knocked down 11 3-pointers on the night including five in the first quarter.
Junior guard Kierra Merchant opened the game with a layup to give Houston its only lead of the afternoon as the Red Wolves fired with two separate 12-0 runs to take control of the game.
After trailing 33-15 in the first, Houston opened the second quarter with a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to nine. Arkansas State responded by scoring three consecutive 3-pointers to regain a comfortable 45-31 lead at the half.
The Red Wolves used a 17-5 run to earn their largest lead of the game at 64-38. With 1:31 remaining in the third, the Cougars used a 9-2 run to get within 20 points at 66-46.
Graduate guard Kateri Poole scored five points during Houston's 9-0 run to open the fourth quarter, cutting Arkansas State's lead to 11. The Cougars continued to chip away, but it was not enough as the Red Wolves secured the 83-66 victory.
