
Men’s Golf Finishes First Round at Trinity Forest Invitational

Junior Chi Chun Chen tied for fourth with 67 at Trinity Forest Golf Club to lead Cougars
DALLAS – University of Houston Men's Golf junior Chi Chun Chen posted a 5-under 67 to lead the Cougars during the First Round of the Trinity Forest Invitational on Sunday.
As a team, the Cougars, finished the first 18 holes with a score of 6-under 282 and were tied for fourth with Furman and Rice on the 7,617-yard, par-72 course at Trinity Forest Golf Club.
Starting off No. 1, Chen drained two birdies in a three-hole stretch at Nos. 3-5 and added back-to-back birdies at Nos. 7-8 before enduring a double-bogey 6 at No. 9 to cap his first nine.
The Tainan, Taiwan, native opened his second nine with two birdies in his first three holes and rebounding from a bogey at No. 13 to drain consecutive birdies at Nos. 14-15.
Senior Hudson Weibel enjoyed his own round under par with a 70 and was tied for 11th. The Dallas native used a birdie on the 429-yard, par-4 seventh hole to return to even par on his first nine and made birdie at No. 10 to start his second nine.
Weibel rallied from a bogey at No. 13 to make the team's lone eagle of the round at the par-4 14th hole and added his final birdie of the day at the par-5 16th hole
Sophomore Hsuan-Yi Chen was tied for 29th at 72 while junior Grant Doggett was tied for 42nd at 73. Senior Kevin An was tied for 49th at 74 while freshman Jayk Altic was tied for 63rd at 76 while playing as an individual.
USC and Baylor were tied for the team lead at 279 to stand two shots ahead of South Alabama. SMU (283), East Tennessee State (288), North Texas (289) and Sam Houston (289) completed the Top-10 leaders.
Furman's Clark Akers posted a 64 Sunday and stood atop the individual leaderboard. Baylor's Jonas Appel and Rice's Lukas Boandl were tied for second at 65 while SMU's William Sides joined Chen in a tie for fourth.
The Second Round continues with a 9 a.m., split-tee start Monday and the Final Round beginning with an 8:30 a.m., split-tee start Tuesday.
The Cougars are looking to extend their streak of Top-Two team finishes to start the 2025-26 season.
In its most recent action, Houston posted a score of 19-under 845 for a second-place showing at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic at Westwood Golf Club in Houston on Tuesday.
Earlier this season, the Cougars used a record-setting day to sweep the team and individual championships at season-opening Argent Financial Classic at Squire Creek Country Club in Choudrant, La., on Sept. 7-9.
It marked the first time that Houston finished among the Top-Two leaders in each of their first two tournaments to open a season since the 1984-85 NCAA national champion team won its first four events.
Weibel captured the individual title at the Argent Financial Classic after holing an eagle from 123 yards out on the first hole of a playoff.
Grant Doggett posted three straight rounds in the 60s – including a First-Round 66 – to capture the first title of his collegiate career with a score of 15-under 201 at the Bayou City Collegiate Classic on Tuesday. The Beach City, Texas, native set tournaments records for low score to par (-15), low 54-hole score (201) and margin of victory (7 strokes).
