Cougars drop match to their sixth ranked opponent of the year
HOUSTON – The Houston Volleyball team lost to #15 Kansas in straight sets in Fertitta Center on Thursday night.
Â
The match marked Houston's (8-10, 1-6 Big 12) sixth  against a ranked opponent and fifth against an opponent in the Top 15. The Jayhawks improved to 14-7 with a 5-2 mark in Big 12 play.
Â
Senior Alana Torres-Rivera posted 14 digs in the match, her ninth career double-digit performance, while redshirt sophomore Alyssa Gonzales used 10 kills to record her 19th career match with 10-or-more. The Cougars' blocking effort continued to shine as the team tallied nine in the match, averaging three per set, led by four from redshirt senior Barakat Rahmon and three from redshirt senior Kellen Morin.
Â
Kansas quickly seized control of the opening set with an 8-0 run to start the frame. The early lead allowed the Jayhawks to claim a 25-14 set win.
Â
Houston snagged the momentum for much of the second. An early 3-0 stretch put the Cougars up 5-2. Houston continued to hold the lead and forced Kansas to burn its timeouts at 10-6 and 15-10, but a 3-0 run after its second pause closed the gap and allowed the Jayhawks to even the frame at 18-18. Three more ties at 19-19, 20-20, and 21-21 preceded a 3-0 run for the Jayhawks, putting them ahead for good in a 25-23 set victory for Kansas.
Â
Kansas kept its rhythm into the third. Winning seven of the first 10 points, Kansas claimed the lead early and maintained their edge to win the set, 25-16, and the match, 3-0.Â
